NEW Municipal Tree Ordinance (1st Reading Feb 24, 2026)

February 24, 2026

For over two years Durham residents, City Council, and staff have worked hard to improve the City’s municipal tree code. Durham desired a municipal tree code that balances multiple perspectives. The City has worked hard to create such an ordinance and addresses public safety concerns, yet, maintains the beauty and benefits that go along with living in a sylvan setting.

The first reading of the new municipal tree ordinance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the February 24, 2026, City Council Meeting at the Juanita Pohl Center.

Please find both a “clean” version of the draft ordinance below, as well as a version that incorporates the most recent edits.
